As the immersive tech sector is growing at a fast rate, making sure that the industry has the skills, talent and best practice ways of working is crucial for its ongoing success. The BSI has undertaken the first steps to develops industry standards with the launch of its Requirements for Standards in the VR and AR Sectors report.
What the report covers
The report gives an overview of the development of the VR and AR sectors to date and examines the areas where there is a distinct need for standardisation. The report will inform the BSI’s approach to the development of standards, as well as providing insight into VR/AR industry stakeholders.
It specifically identifies key areas of focus for future standardisation work, including:
- To establish health and safety standards and best practice;
- To establish content capture best practice;
- To develop a simplified industrywide set of terminology/specifications;
- To develop post-production standards;
- To develop the VR/AR industry talent pool.
How the research was undertaken
Desk research and in-depth interviews with 30 key industry figures was undertaken. This included the design and medical sectors, content capture and production houses, standards bodies, broadcasters and video content distributors including the adult sector, VR platforms, gaming publishers and the major studios.
