The VR Pottery Studio is a peaceful virtual experience designed to support mental wellbeing through creative activity. It was inspired by the calming and therapeutic effects of traditional pottery-making, where the act of shaping and crafting clay helps individuals focus, slow down, and find emotional balance. The goal of this project is to replicate that same sense of calm and personal connection in a virtual environment.
Users enter a beautifully designed pottery studio set during sunset, where they can walk freely and feel a sense of space and ownership. Gentle background music and the soft crackling of a kiln fire create a relaxing atmosphere that helps users feel present and at ease.
Using VR controllers with haptic feedback, users are able to shape clay on a wheel with natural gestures that feel smooth and intuitive. The experience is carefully designed to avoid frustration, so even users with no prior experience can easily mold the clay into simple or creative forms. Once shaped, the pot can be placed into a virtual kiln for firing, adding a sense of completion to the process.
After firing, users can paint and decorate their pottery directly on the wheel using a virtual brush. They can select from different colours and textures, giving them freedom of expression and artistic control. The pottery model was created in Blender and integrated into Unity for Meta Quest, optimised for comfort and performance.
This open-ended, pressure-free experience gives users space to focus, relax, and express themselves at their own pace. It offers a digital environment that promotes calmness, creativity, and emotional wellbeing, with potential for use in mental health support, art therapy, or wellbeing-focused programs.
